Fun Folk Horror Flicks for Cozy Fall Movie Nights
I thought it would be fun to share some of the movies I’ve watched in recent years that have a folksy vibe, and put them all together in one place. Chances are if you’ve seen one or a few of these, you’ll like the others! Most of them have the same vibe and will find similar audiences. Sure, some of these are mainstream or have been heavily promoted through networks like Shudder, but if you find even one new-to-you option on this list I’ll be positively thrilled to death. I don’t like to give too much detail when doing lists like this because they’ll take too long to read, but I want to give just enough to entice you to explore further and see for yourselves!
Movie Review: Violation
Intensely brutal horror movie rooted in real life trauma that is not easy to watch, but worth it if you can get through it. It will wreck you.
Movie Review: Madres (2021)
Social justice and historically inspired horror with haunting, emotional tension.
Movie Review: Hellbender
There is not a single thing this family can make that I won’t absolutely adore. Truly.

Book Review: Not Good for Maidens
Fantasy book that's perfect for fans of "The Magicians" "Harry Potter" "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" and the darker side of Disney
"They’ll lure you in with fruit and gems and liquor and dancing, merriment to remember for the rest of your life. But that’s an illusion. The market is death itself."
Movie Review: Lux Aeterna by Gaspar Noé
I do very much love a good meta movie experience, though, and especially one that has a wit and intelligence about it in addition to the goofiness of it. This meta-film is a brilliant commentary on the chaos of filmmaking, the industry’s disrespect and mistreatment of women, the ego and predatory attitude of filmmakers, the politics of Hollywood/Film, etc. It’s clever, thoughtful, and engrossing, and it’s got a great sense of humor. The cast are all brilliant no matter if they’re given seconds or minutes of screen time, each of them deftly fulfilling their assigned caricature of an industry persona. And as to be expected, it’s of course creatively shot and edited.
Movie Review: After Blue
A film review for a bizarre, surreal French Cinema entry with Queer Themes.
Movie Review: Honeycomb
This psychedelic, experimental, low budget film is the Pinterest aesthetic board, tumblr feed energy and lofi Instagram reel of teenaged dreams, and much of its dialogue reads like meandering middle-of-the-night-sads tweets and melodramatic posts on the AllPoetry forums — all of which aids in the enjoyment of watching this debut feature.
The Wonderful World of Tee Franklin, Comic Book Writer
I am the biggest fan of Tee Franklin, and will read anything she writes, ever.
Movie Review: The Innocents
An absolutely gut-wrenching story exploring childhood grief, anger, and trauma through dark sci-fi with horror elements.
Four children from different households in one apartment complex forge a powerful and special bond of friendship.
It’s truly terrifying, emotionally raw, disturbing, and very unsettling.
Movie Review: Medusa (2021)
A powerful reimagining of the Medusa mythology, and a biting satirical look at the pseudo religious hypocrisy of Evangelical Devour Christianity, “Medusa” is a modern day feminist tale of horror fantasy. Plenty of folks may find this lacking, and I can see the slow burn really getting their goat, but I absolutely loved this!
Book Review - Girls Don’t Like Boys, Girls Want Tickets to Visit Jurassex Park: a review of “Wet Hot Allosaurus Summer”
This book is exactly what you think it is, and yes you should still read it LOL.
Movie Review: Da Sweet Blood of Jesus - Directed by Spike Lee
Spike Lee doesn’t miss a beat when it comes to including exquisite pieces of African Art in nearly every frame, be it tribal and global, or modern and contemporary artists — it is so rich and luxe and adds so much to the atmosphere, as well as helping highlight character traits. The soundtrack alternates between piano score and hip-hop/R&B and always perfectly compliments the scene at hand. All of this truly makes for an absolutely spectacular ambiance and mood for this reimagining of the original Ganja and Hess.
